Horse Riding
We provide you with safety equipment and full training to ensure you are comfortable with riding a horse.
Our guests have kayaked both Doubtful Sound and Milford Sound and have come home ecstatic about their experience. They are entralled with the scenery and also the professionalism of the kayak operators. The overnight trip to Doubtful Sound was the highlight for one couple, they were so impressed with the passion and expertise of the kayaking guides and also their knowledge of the area and it's history.
There are often pods of Dusky and bottlenose dolphins checking out your progress and it is also possible to see blue and yellow eyed penguins, fur seals and sooty shearwaters (muttonbirds) to name just a few of the wildlife species that live there.
There are many different options for flightseeing. We have helicopters (which can pick you up from the front lawn), a float plane and fixed wing planes and any of these options is truly recommended. You will fly over country that no-one has ever set foot on and I am sure if you get a chance to watch the film Ata Whenua which was filmed in Fiordland and only screened in our local picture theatre you will see the benefit of viewing Fiordland from the sky.
Ask Dawn for more information or booking you a flight.
There are many Mountain Biking tracks around Te Anau and we have mountain bikes that you can borrow while you are staying with us.
Heli-skiing can be arranged from Dock Bay Lodge. There is a one and a half hours drive to the ski location at Mt Nicholas or we can arrange for Southern Lakes Helicopters to fly you from Te Anau. All ski equipment can be hired.
For more information on heli-skiing go to www.southernlakeshelicopters.co.nz or www.heliworks.co.nz
Because of the stunning scenery in Fiordland horse trekking is a brilliant option for the outdoor enthusiast. There are great options for the experienced and not so experienced rider and your trail guide will choose a horse to suit your ability. This is fast becoming a very popular option and I recommend that you make enquiries early so as not to be disappointed.
Hunting with the hounds is also very popular and Fiordland and Southland have well established hunt clubs. At Dock Bay Lodge we have 12 acres of beautiful grazing for your horse or we can arrange a horse for you to hunt.
